Rick Helms:  Presentation -  The differences between inductive and deductive profiling

We've all seen it—the supersleuth who is told about a murder and proclaims that the murderer "...is a short man who didn't finish high school, and drives a Volkswagen Bug. He has asthma, a slight corrected lateral lisp, and his mother was a prostitute..." . This is what some novels and movies consider forensic profiling. In this presentation, retired forensic psychologist and three-time Shamus Award nominee Rick Helms (SIX MILE CREEK, Five Star Mysteries 2010) will explain the differences between inductive profiling, to which we have all been subjected, and deductive profiling, which is more likely to produce useful information that can lead to capturing and prosecuting a criminal, and the limitations of both. Examples from the FBI's Investigative Support Unit and famous murder cases will be included.

WHODUNIT: 101 Mistakes Mystery Writers Make – Part One

Joe Paglino is a crime author, a former investigator in the NYC Medical Examiner’s Office, a former Detective in the Brooklyn DA Office, and is currently a Detective in New Jersey. He will talk about how people are murdered (shot, stabbed, poisoned, etc.), using crime scene slides so writers can accurately depict crime scenes in their work. Joe will also offer many “whodunits” for the audience to solve. This presentation is not for the faint of heart!
